I didn't read all this, but you might want to ...

"The iMonk Spends Five Hours with Scott Hahn: The Full Report"

I read just enough to get my chuckle for the day. Poor fellow.

Scott Hahn is dangerous for Evangelicals. I think the reason is that in reality he is still "one of them" but has had an awakening that makes him *not* one of them. His teaching style is Evangelical and so is his slick polished look. If he would have shown up at "Creation '92" when I was there with my Youth Group we all would have been Catholic inside of a week.

That being said, I find it difficult to read his books now. Every chapter of every book makes the same point. (at least the ones I've read) Example:

"The Old is Revealed in the New and the New is hidden in the Old." Over and over. I get it Scott! I get it!

Which makes me come to the point that each one of his books is pointed directly to one thing: Conversion. The Catholic Altar Call is that moment when the light switch flips on and all of a sudden it all makes sense. He is a Catholic Evangelical.

What worries me is what if one day he falls off the boat and goes Protestant or even Orthodox...he'd take a lot of people with him.

I'm not too worried about the iMonk succumbing.

Once one starts switching churches, there's no telling where it'll stop. Just look at the Crunchy Con.

"Creation '92" - what's that, like, Christian Woodstock?

Every chapter of every book makes the same point.

I can't get past the cutesy chapter titles.

Do Evangelicals really get off on obnoxious puns or is Hahn sellin' 'em short? Can we move past Josh McDowell, please?

I've actually tried to read enough Hahn to write a scathingly critical post of his books, but Providence has thus far prevented me, like a present-day Balaam or something.

You know, I'll allow people to call themselves "Catholic Evangelical" but it's not a designation that I find helpful ... it only muddies the water.

To my mind, "Evangelical" means "Protestant" but also "of the gospel" - like the "evangelical vows" of chastity, poverty and obedience the religious profess. I know some Protestants who like to refer to themselves as "Catholic" but that also confuses things.

Thanks for your comment ... I do sympathize with people who are attracted by some things but repelled by other things in Catholicism. It is a mixed bag, if viewed at arm's length ... a view that neither of us have.
